BOMBON - EL PERRO (2004) [feature]

Argentina/Spain (MIFF2005,Cinema Argentino)
Director: Carlos Sorin

Bombon - El Perro is a story about fate and friendship, and a magnificent white Argentinean mastiff named Bombon. The amiable Juan Villegas has lost his job at a remote Patagonian service station. At his age, finding a new job seems unlikely and odd jobs aren't going to sustain him for long. When he repairs a young woman's car one day, he receives a most unusual gift as payment: a beautiful pedigree hound, Bombon. Man and dog carefully eye each other off, each creature weighing the pros and cons of a long-term relationship. The pooch is good-natured and willing, and so a friendship begins. Soon Bombon's true worth as a dog-show contender and stud champion is revealed to his master, but the path to riches and success is always a rocky one, and friendships are inevitably tested. Carlos Sorin follows up his award-winning Historias Minimas with this sweet-hearted and slyly amusing paean to the special bond between man and dog. Bombon - El Perro is also a comical view of the chasm that exists between Argentina's rich and poor. --- D Carlos Sorin P Oscar Kramer S Santiago Calori WS Bavaria Film International L Spanish w/English subtitles TD 35mm/col/2004/96mins.
