FROZEN RIVER (2008) [feature]

USA (MIFF2008,International Panorama)
Director: Courtney Hunt

What would you risk for your family?

When her husband vanishes after gambling away the family savings, Ray (Melissa Leo, 21 Grams) is left struggling to care for her boys and make ends meet. Lured by the promise of fast money, she becomes involved in helping Lila, a widowed Mohawk Indian, smuggle people across the Canadian-US border. The money is good, the risk is high - it isn't long before the law closes in.

Awarded the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance, Frozen River is a keen and subtle observation on the nature of poverty and desperation. “I like characters that are not immediately appealing… I like living with them in the intimacy of a cinema long enough to at least understand them, maybe even grow to love them.” - filmmaker Courtney Hunt
