40 x 15: THE 40 FORTY YEARS OF THE DIRECTORS' FORTNIGHT (2008) [feature]

France (MIFF2008,Cannes Directors' Fortnight Tribute)
Director: Olivier Jahan

The legendary May 1968 strike of Paris left its indelible mark on the Cannes Film Festival, just as assuredly as it left its mark on all of French society.

1968 saw the Cannes Film Festival halt in solidarity with striking students and workers across France, and from this swelling of leftist pride sprung the Directors' Fortnight section of the Cannes program - a non-competitive sidebar for countering the academism of the main selection of films.

In the 40th year of the Directors' Fortnight, Olivier Jahan recounts its eventful history with archival footage, film clips and interviews, as well as a behind-the-scenes lead-up to the Fortnight's 2007 edition. Filmmaker interviews include Jim Jarmusch, Gus Van Sant, Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Michael Haneke, William Friedkin, Bong Joon-ho, Spike Lee and many more.
