EXAMINED LIFE (2008) [feature]

Canada (MIFF2009,Documentaries)
Director: Astra Taylor

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” - Socrates

Taking her cue from Socrates's famous quote, documentary filmmaker Astra Taylor follows up her last philosophical film adventure, Zizek! (MIFF 06), with another exploration of musings from some of the world's greatest modern thinkers.

Taylor picks at a variety of great minds including famous philosopher Cornel West, Peter Singer and Slavoj Žižek himself, the offbeat subject of her previous film. Bringing philosophy to the street, Taylor talks with the thinkers as they stroll through the city, philosophise in parks or poke through junkyards. The result is an amusing, irreverent and sometimes mind-expanding look at the nature of the world and how we should live in it.

“Serves as a playful riposte to the notion that movies are for turning one's mind off.” - Variety
