MARADONA BY KUSTURICA (2008) [feature]

Spain, France (MIFF2009,Documentaries)
Director: Emir Kusturica

“After I scored, I started running as if I'd stolen an Englishman's wallet.” - Diego Maradona

Serbian director Emir Kusturica presents an intimate portrait of Argentinean soccer star Diego Maradona. An examination of his god-like status in international football and popular culture, Kusturica also delves into the footballer's political activism, struggles with drug addiction and his infamous ‘Hand of God' goal against England during the 1986 World Cup.

Mixing sport with politics - unabashedly leftist, Maradona met with Fidel Castro, and represents Argentina at anti-imperialist rallies - Maradona by Kusturica examines the soccer legend as both as folk legend and man.

The film's soundtrack features the Sex Pistols and Argentinean rockers Manu Chao.

“An original perspective brought to bear on a complex figure with a fascinatingly chequered career.” - Variety
