Images Medievales (1950) [Short]

France (MIFF1954,Films From France)
Director: William Novik

An intimate picture of life in the Middle Ages as recorded in detailed miniatures of illuminated manuscripts of the 14th and 15th centuries found in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Recreated is the daily work of the French peasants, life and pleasures of nobility in the court, tournaments, and violence of medieval warfare. William Novik has achieved variety and movement, working from originals often not much larger than postage stamps. He used a special painstaking 3-filter colour technique and magnifying attachment to his lens throughout his year's work on the film, The vigorous musical accompaniment, recorded with authentic instruments, is based entirely on original medieval melodies.
