Kanada (1993) [Short]

Canada (MIFF1994,Experimental)
Director: Mike Hoolboom

Prolific Canadian experimental filmmaker and activist, Hoolboom turns his hand to an ambitious multi-narrative tale of his country as collectively traumatised by war, greed, gender difference and high and low scale political corruption in the shadow of American mass media and its colonising Corporate mentality. Kanada is an unusual example of the 70s agitprop film dragged screaming into the 90s, exposing an anxiety and obsessiveness about what it means to hold a leftist world-viewpoint amid a media generic world of science fiction, apocalyptic horror films and the nightly TV news. The cast includes Atom Egoyan regular Gabrielle Rose, and Vancouver theatre celebrity Babs Chula.
