Speak It! From the Heart of Black Nova Scotia (1993) [Short]

Canada (MIFF1994,Youth Film Festival)
Director: Sylvia Hamilton

A documentary from Canada which looks at the various race relations within a Canadian school. We follow Shingai, Tandi, Shawn and Krists as they describe the experience of being young and black today. We watch them as they work to establish a Cultural Awareness Youth Group for building pride and self-esteem through educational and cultural programs. This documentary is accompanied by a fantastic musical score; a blend of jazz and gospel. A wonderful documentary which looks at a problem and works towards a solution, with youth as the directing agents. Uplifting and empowering.
