JAPANESE STORY (2002) [Feature]

Australia (MIFF2003)
Director: Sue Brooks

"In Japan we have an expression which, when translated, means 'you meet only once, so make everything in that moment count.'" - Gotaro Tsunishima

Toni Colette is Sandy, an ambitious geologist who has just started up a mapping software company in Perth with Baird (Matthew Dyktynski). When a potential client, the enigmatic Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunishima), arrives from Japan wanting to be shown around, the task falls on the reluctant Sandy. Instead of a simple business tour, Hiromitsu wants to experience the outback, and the two head off into the Pilbara desert. Equally displeased with each other - Sandy sees her Japanese companion as uncivil, uncommunicative and sexist, while Hiromitsu views his guide as loud, rude and aggressive - they travel further into the desert, leaving more of what they know behind. Their journey turns into one of change and discovery for them both.
