THE FAMILY JAMS (2009) [feature]

USA (MIFF2010,Backbeat)
Director: Kevin Barker

Three bands, a van and a harp - a rambling tour through the inception of ‘freak folk'.

In the summer of 2004, folk-rockers Vetiver joined Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom on a ragtag tour across the US. Vetiver guitarist Kevin Barker filmed it all - the gigs, the time on the road and the downtime between shows.

Filmed before the breakout indie success of Banhart and Newsom's brand of ‘freak folk' - before the tiny clubs and busted van were replaced with thousand-strong crowds and tour buses - this is an exploration of touring from the inside; a look at that nostalgic time spent on the brink, before success carries friends away from each other.

Features plenty of live performances, including Antony & the Johnsons and Espers.
