THE UNLOVED (2009) [feature]

UK (MIFF2010,First Encounters)
Director: Samantha Morton

“Poignant, perceptive and unrelenting, this may be bleak, [but] like all great drama, it is ultimately uplifting.” - Empire

Like Alice down the rabbit hole, Lucy - the victim of an abusive father and an absent mother - tumbles deep into the frightening world of foster care.

Actor Samantha Morton makes her directorial debut with a harrowing story born out of her first-hand experience growing up in the UK residential care system. Co-written with Tony Grisoni (Red Riding trilogy, MIFF 09) and featuring a mesmerising performance from 11-year-old Molly Windsor, The Unloved exposes a broken social system and all those caught in the middle of it.

“It may sound strange, but I wanted to make a beautiful film about what happened to me.” - filmmaker Samatha Morton
