INTO THE ABYSS (2011) [feature]
“A disquieting, heartbreaking look at American crime and punishment.” - Hollywood Reporter
In 2001 two young Texan men were convicted of a horrific triple murder. One received a life sentence; the other was sentenced to death.
Part of Werner Herzog's Death Row project, which also includes a four-part television series, Into the Abyss is the acclaimed filmmaker's meditation on humanity amidst the anger and guilt that permeate the case. Through compassionate, astute interviews with the perpetrators, prison workers and victims' relatives, Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams, MIFF 11) builds a portrait of an America anguished both by violent crime and existential questioning.
Winner of the Grierson Award for Best Documentary at the 2011 BFI London Film Festival.
“Herzog can be trusted to ask the right questions of his subjects - despite the fact he's clearly unyielding in his anti-death penalty stance.” - Variety
Due to forces beyond our control, Into The Abyss has not been delivered to MIFF in time for the scheduled screening Monday 6 August. As a result, this screening is cancelled. We have scheduled a new screening on Sunday 19 August.
