FRANCES HA (2012) [feature]

USA (MIFF2013,International Panorama)
Director: Noah Baumbach

"An exhilarating black-and-white New York seriocomedy … with a stellar star turn by co-writer Greta Gerwig." – Hollywood Reporter

Frances is a 20-something dance apprentice who has plenty of plans but succeeds at very few of them in this breezy, urban odyssey about an optimistic misfit and her charismatic friends. Shot in a freewheeling, off-the-cuff style, the deceptively simple film fills the screen with the playful energy of its titular lead character – a quipping, klutzy delight. The action bounces from Brooklyn to Sacramento with a brief stopover in Paris, all accompanied by a jaunty score ranging from Bowie to banjo.

Gleefully indebted to the nouvelle vague (Truffaut and Godard in particular) with a touch of mid-career Woody Allen, Frances Ha is a charming, whimsical addition to director Noah Baumbach's comedic oeuvre.

"Equal parts endearing and hilarious." – Sound on Sight
