MILLA (2017) [Feature]

France,Portugal (MIFF2018,Europe,International)
Director: Valerie Massadian

Winner of the Special Jury and Audience Awards at Locarno, Milla is the lyrical, deeply moving sophomore feature from French virtuoso Valerie Massadian (Nana, MIFF 2012).

Seventeen-year-old Milla and her boyfriend Leo are living a life of quiet poverty and deep happiness in the north of France, squatting in an abandoned house and scavenging for whatever they need. But when Milla falls pregnant and Leo has to take a job on an industrial ship, the contours of their idyll are irrevocably ruptured, and Milla will be forced to face the world on her own.

A film of mesmerising imagery and intimacy, Milla is Valerie Massadian’s love letter to feminine strength and the unexpected poetry of the everyday. With a photographer’s eye for composition, Massadian has delivered another delicately balanced character study, framed by moments of staggering beauty and deep humanity.

"Quietly moving and unassumingly profound … [forms] a beautifully symmetrical whole." – Film Comment
