Organised by the Industry Programs Unit of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), these public-access ticketed events are for you – whether you are a film or media student; an aspiring or existing screenwriter, editor, director or producer; a film aficionado or just curious!
MIFF’s Industry Programs Unit organises 37°South Market, Australia's only festival-based film co-financing market (which includes Bridging the Gap, Breakthru Screenings, PostScript&Direct and Books at MIFF) and Accelerator Lab, Australia's only screen director development workshop at a film festival preparing the hottest short filmmaking talent for a future in feature filmmaking. The Industry Programs Unit also operates the Premiere Fund.
WOOTTON TALKS MUSICAL MOVIE LEGENDS
Presented by MIFF 37ºSouth Market & Accelerator Lab, Adrian Wootton OBE returns exclusively to Melbourne for another series of his acclaimed Illustrated Film Talks, this year focusing on musical movie legends Sammy Davis Jr, Barbra Streisand, David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe. Wootton will recount these unique stars’ enthralling life stories and career highs, accompanied by swathes of film clips and images from their personal and professional histories.
A former director of the London Film Festival, British Film Institute and the UK’s National Film Theatre, Wootton is CEO of Film London & The British Film Commission, director of the Crime Scene Festival, and a program advisor to the Venice Film Festival, London Film Festival and Italy’s Courmayeur Noir Fest. Wootton has also contributed to the Guardian, Sight & Sound and BBC Radio, and received an honorary doctorate from The University of East Anglia.

MIRANDA HARCOURT: ACTING UP
Praised by Nicole Kidman as “intuitive, unique, amazing” and by Peter Jackson as “at the top of her field”, Miranda Harcourt has coached many award-winning screen performances, including actors Juliette Binoche and Dev Patel, while working with such directors as Jane Campion, Morten Tyldum, Gaylene Preston and Garth Davis.
Recent Australia/NZ films Harcourt has worked on include Judy & Punch, Dirt Music, Vai and the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported Buoyancy; recent international titles include films The Aftermath and Leave No Trace, and TV series This Country, Big Little Lies and The Undoing.
Across two workshops, Harcourt introduces simple but innovative ways of achieving great performances with tools for rehearsal and on set that get actors where they need to be – fast – along with the concepts of Connection, White Space, Internal Landscape, Vista and Objects. Harcourt’s coaching is enriched by her work with Verbatim theatre using real voices and real texts.

BOBETTE BUSTER'S WHAT'S THE STORY?
Hollywood-based story and script consultant Bobette Buster’s five-part seminar series explores the factors that help Take Your Storytelling to the Next Level and Learn What Makes a Great Story Well Told.
Buster lectures and consults globally, including with the likes of Disney, Pixar, Sony, Fox and the BBC. She is also Boston Northeastern University’s Professor of Digital Storytelling Practice, has written two books (Do Story: How to Tell Your Story so the World Listens – which is now in its 10th printing and has been translated into five languages – and Do Listen: Understand What's Really Being Said, Find a New Way Forwards) and the Tribeca and Cannes-selected feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, which she also produced.
Buster, who has worked as a creative story executive for Hollywood greats Tony Scott (The Good Wife), Ray Stark (Steel Magnolias) and Larry Gelbart (Tootsie), holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program where she was Adjunct Professor from 1992–2015.
