Thoughtful and incredibly powerful, Traveling While Black transports you into Washington DC restaurant Ben’s Chilli Bowl – a safe haven for African Americans for more than six decades – where the conversations and camaraderie immerse you into the experience of living while black in the US, from segregation in the 1950s to contemporary police hostility. In intimate moments, patrons including Samira Rice (mother of police shooting victim Tamir Rice) and civil rights leader Courtland Cox reflect on their experiences and emotions.
Roger Ross Williams (Life, Animated, MIFF 2016), the first African American director to win the short-film documentary Oscar (for 2010’s Music by Prudence) co-directs with Ayesha Nadarajah in collaboration with Emmy-winning studio Felix & Paul, creating an innovative VR documentary you won’t soon forget.
